Outdoor cushions are designed to withstand some wear and tear. Generally, their fabric, stitching, and fillers are more durable than those of indoor cushions. However, improper storage during the off-season can lead to mold, mildew, and even pest infestations. Here’s how to store your patio cushions correctly.

Best Practices for Storing Outdoor Cushions

1. Clean and Dry Thoroughly

Before storing your cushions, make sure they are clean and completely dry. Dirt, pollen, and moisture can degrade the fabric over time if left untreated. Here’s how to clean fabric cushions:

• Remove cushions from the base and sweep off any debris.
• Follow manufacturer cleaning instructions on the tag.
• For removable covers, wash them in the machine and air dry.
• For non-removable covers, scrub with a mild detergent and a soft brush.
• Remove stains or mildew with white vinegar or a bleach-water mixture, testing on a small area first.
• Rinse thoroughly with a hose and let the cushions air dry in the sun.

Once clean, consider waterproofing the fabric with a spray to enhance its water resistance.

2. Use a Storage Unit and/or Storage Bags or Tarps

The goal is to keep moisture and pests out:
