Create More Space in Your Life! Fit More Stuff in Less Space! How?

create more space in your life

In the current landscape of the housing market – chock full of condos in high rises – there is one thing that you will almost never hear anyone say, “I have too many closets!” Almost everybody we know is fighting a losing battle with their apartment/house or office, trying to fit in more stuff in less space. Clutter in your life and lack of space can stress you out and affect your mood and productivity. Why not create more space in your life? Here are some useful tips…

De-Clutter … De-Stress

There is a time to click the distress button when you have too many stuff in your room, and the time is now! Make a commitment to yourself and get rid of all things you don’t need. Yes, those dumb bells you were going to start lifting 3 years ago? It’s time to let go. What about all the things you ABSOLUTELY do need to keep but don’t need every day such as seasonal equipment, furniture and clothing and old but important files?   Free up space by putting them in a storage locker.

Get creative with your storage

There are some very innovative ways on the internet to create more storage in your house. Some of them may be too wacky for your taste, but some may be worth giving a shot. Having proper storage solutions will make things easier to find, helps you stay organized and create more space in your life!

Think Vertically

We, humans, are so used to looking at our eye level that we discount the space above our heads and below our knees. These areas are suitable to store your rarely used or worn items that still must be accessible. Invest in a shelf, use the vertical space and use clearly labeled boxes to go with it. The idea is to get stuff off the floor!

Take Advantage of offsite storage

The simplest way to create more space? Rent a storage locker. Many facilities offer varying sizes of storage lockers that will fit your needs. Renting a small 5’ x 5’ x 10 ft high locker at a fairly reasonable price will do wonders for your mission. You can store everything you don’t need to keep in your work or living space in the locker, where it will be easy to access when you need it. For helpful information and advice from friendly storage experts, contact us at Downtown U-Lok.

Life is about getting your stuff off the floor, reclaiming and finding more space!

Life Changes!

Life Changes!

We all experience many changes during our lives. We seek education without knowing where it will lead. We marry, divorce, move homes, become a parent, switch careers, get sick, win the lottery, grieve over the loss of a parent, child or other loved one. According to Statistics Canada, the conjugal lives of seniors are changing as the proportion of those who were divorced or separated rose from 4% to 12% from 1981 to 2011. How do we successfully negotiate the uncertainties of life?

Instead of dwelling on hopes and fears about an unknowable future, focus your attention on whatever is happening now. Care for yourself. Stay home or go out. Attend an exercise class or group adventure. Do whatever feels comforting to you right now.

Talk to Others

When we go through major changes, we think we are dealing with something no one else can understand or no one else is going through. However, others can empathize with you. You are not alone. You are also never alone because you always have yourself to rely on. So the idea of being alone is false. It is up to you to tell people what to say and what to do that will be helpful. Ask very specifically for what you need and for even, sometimes, what you need to hear. Left on their own to guess what support you need makes people feel helpless. When they feel helpless, they do not act. So empower others and empower yourself by letting them know specifically how they can help. Talking as therapy is well recognized in the health professions.

Let it out

Having feelings of sadness is natural, to grieve over the loss of something, to feel angry about your situation, or to place blame. You have permission to feel that way, but only for a brief period. If you spend too much time in that place of anger or pity or blame, you end up not being able to adapt to your change. It keeps you in a place of helplessness. What you need is to be in a place of hope and of growth.

Adapt

Our ability to adapt is amazing. The adaptability and flexibility of our spirit and of our being is a given. Those who cannot change and adapt have convinced themselves it is not possible. If you trust that you can adapt, then you will. If you believe that you can change, then you will, no matter what the challenge.

Hope for a brighter future

Having hope and having a positive perspective will keep you moving forward every day. If you give up hope it will be like letting go of a rope that pulls you forward. Believing that things can and will be different, and that you will see the light at the end of the tunnel is the most important thing in getting through a change process. Knowing that there is an end in sight, knowing there are possibilities, and having hope that things are going to be better. Further interesting reading about ‘hope’ and its origins can be found here.

Grow

Going through a change, especially one that is traumatic, changes you forever. It changes how you see life and deal with things. You are never going to be the same again and that is a good thing. Because in the midst of change is a great deal of learning, if you are willing to have vision and perspective. If you are willing to continually ask yourself the question, “What am I supposed to be learning from this?” “How am I supposed to grow?” “How will I become a better person because of this?” In any change, you can become stronger, with a better version of you. Just because something changes, even something radical, it does not change the core of whom you are as a person. You will have the same mission, the same purpose, and the same values. So having something different about you does not make you a different human being. If you are strong and centered and grounded, that is still who you are. Sometimes you have to remind yourself of that.

How to Pack & Store Your Boxes

Packing

Use smaller boxes for heavy items such as books (pack flat) and dishes; the large boxes for light items such as blankets, bedding and linens. Put heavier items lying on the bottom and lighter items on top. Do not overload for stacking ease.

Hang up your good clothes in wardrobe boxes. A little TLC and room to breathe will keep them fresh.

Try to keep your boxes in basic uniform sizes, 2 cube, 4 cube and 6 cube boxes. Easier for stacking.

Label boxes on all four sides for easy identification, number them and seal with packing tape. Mark which side is UP ↑ for delicate items

Always use good quality packaging tape to ensure your box bottoms will not come apart.

Protect paintings, mirrors, pictures, and screens by placing them on edge, not flat, and packing individually with strong cardboard.

Protect mattress, sofas and chair with covers specially designed for them.

Always use plenty of dish wrap paper to individually protect dishes, glasses and delicate items. Avoid using newspaper as they may leave stain marks.

Wrap larger items with shrink wrap or moving blankets if they are susceptible to scratching.

Storing

Plan your storage space!
Mark the items that you need to access most often and ask the movers to place them towards the front of your locker space. Also, let them know if you want to leave room for a walkway to access the back.

Save storage space by removing legs from tables, dismantling bed frames and wrapping them together with screws in plastic bags using packaging tape. Stand large items up on end.

All appliances must be clean and dry before storing. Wedge it slightly ajar for circulation.

Store all your garden supplies, rakes, shovels hoses etc. in your trash barrel.

Drain all gas and oil from engines in lawnmowers, pressure washers etc.

Maximize use of our 10 ft. high ceilings by stacking boxes with heavier boxes on the bottom.

Handy tools to keep in your locker: step ladder, flashlight for hard to see items in the back.

Use free standing metal shelving to help organize your storage unit and take advantage of the vertical space.

A great way to remember what you stored is to make a simple location map of your important boxes and contents that you might have to access often and taping it to your locker wall.
